During times of extreme stress and overwhelming life experiences – such as those natural disasters experienced by Oklahomans in the 2013 tornadoes – it can be difficult to access the money you need to survive.
You may not have access to your usual sources of money, or even have access to your own money. It may also be that you need money for emergency repairs or living expenses while you are recovering from a crisis like hail or tornado destruction.
Here are four ways to protect yourself financially during times of crisis and avoid having to use lending options that may be too expensive for you:
- Contact your current bank or credit union right away. You may have access to a temporary debit card if yours has been lost.
- Contact 211 and faith based organizations to help you in your time of need. Going through a shocking event, such as a tornado, flood or fire, is the perfect time to accept aid from others.
- If you need to borrow fast emergency money, consider approaching your credit union or bank first. Even friends and family may be an option to help you get through the crisis. This is not a good time to visit loan stores or other high interest lending alternatives.
- Contact your lenders so they can know what you are going through and that you may need to defer a payment or two. If you experience complications with this approach, contact CCCSOK.org at 405-789-2227 to get free assistance from one of our experienced credit counselors.
